I took these photos at la fête des lumières (Festival of Lights) in Lyon. This is an incredible art event in from the 6th to the 9th of December that takes place alongside les marchés de Noël (the Christmas markets.) The city projected beautiful designs and short films on buildings and monuments lighting everything up at night in beautiful colors! Large crowds gathered to watch each film/projection and then most likely grabbed some vin chaud or a crêpe before walking to another spot in the city to watch another light show.
The event originated as a religious celebration in the 17th century thanking the Virgin Mary for sparing Lyon from the plague. Some people around the city still put lights in their windows as a sign of gratitude and/or a way to continue the original tradition.
I highly recommend going to Lyon if you are ever in France in early December! I also congratulate the artists who put together the projections in the second picture. There were so many people involved in creating the event that I do not know who to give credit to!
Oh, and it may be February, but I have to include a Christmas song…
